Located on School District property beside the elementary school, the Legacy Garden has become a vibrant centerpiece in the heart of downtown Roberts Creek. It showcases organic growing practices and offers hands-on learning opportunities for both students and the wider community. This collaborative project is a partnership between the community, Roberts Creek Elementary, and School District 46, with shared responsibility for its vision, construction, and ongoing care.
As a ferry-dependent community, local food security is especially vital. While many Roberts Creek residents have space for home gardens, not everyone has the knowledge or experience to grow their own food. The Legacy Garden provides a welcoming space for children and community members to learn sustainable gardening practices — skills that are increasingly important in today’s uncertain world.
The design and implementation of the Legacy Garden are led by Larry Popowich of Periplum Designs. With decades of experience and a deep commitment to the community, Larry has been instrumental in every stage of the project. Initially brought on as the garden’s designer, he continues to serve as the key business sponsor, offering guidance and expertise. His strong connections to local businesses and the horticultural industry have opened doors and created opportunities that would not have been possible otherwise. Larry is truly a local hero.
Roberts Creek Community School administers and manages the Legacy Garden, with oversight provided by the Legacy Garden Steering Committee. More than 100 community members have generously contributed their time, energy, and talents to this project — becoming essential partners in its growth and success.
