AFTER SCHOOL SPORTS & ARTS INITIATIVE (ASSAI)

In 2010, British Columbia’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture launched a pilot program for under-represented students to take part in after school sport programs. The successful pilot was expanded to include arts programming and is now operating in 22 school districts across British Columbia. From parkour to painting, thousands of students in Kindergarten to Grade 8 participate in ASSAI each year.

Program Location

Schools  are the main location for ASSAI programming. On school

grounds there are typically a variety of spaces to use, and school

personnel can act as collaborators and supporters of the program.

• The use of offsite facilities for activities  (e.g.,

mountain biking) is  included as it enriches student experience.

Program Design

ACCESSIBLE & ENGAGING

Programs are accessible and inclusive to children who face barriers to participation. This includes designing programs to be welcoming to all children and making it easy for participants to access the program.

• Programs are designed to support participants in elementary school.

• Programs are ALWAYS free.

• Programs are designed to reduce barriers to participation such as:

o financial,

o geographical,

o transportation,

o cultural,

o family circumstances, or

o behavioural.

• Programs are held immediately after school.

• Programs are varied, fun, and allow children to try new things. Both sport and arts programs offer an appropriate level of challenge and opportunities for continued skill development.

AFTER SCHOOL SPORTS & ARTS INITIATIVE (ASSAI)

At RCCS, we are proud to coordinate and deliver free after-school fine arts and sports programming for students at every elementary school in the district. Our mission is to ensure that all children — especially those facing barriers to access — have the opportunity to explore, learn, and grow through enriching creative and physical activities.

Inspiring Mentorship

Our programs are led by accomplished local artists and experienced coaches who are passionate about mentoring young learners. Each session is also supported by a dedicated staff member who specializes in encouraging and nurturing children’s potential, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for every participant.

Program Structure

Each program runs in 7–8 week sessions, with small class sizes limited to 12 students. This allows for personalized attention and meaningful engagement. We prioritize enrollment for students who may not otherwise have access to these kinds of opportunities.

Arts Offerings

RCCS offers a dynamic selection of arts programming designed to spark creativity and skill development. Some of our past offerings have included:

  • Fibre Arts
  • Pottery
  • Shadow Puppetry
  • Outdoor Art
  • Drawing
  • Watercolours
  • Multi-media Art

We continue to expand and evolve our arts programming based on student interest and community talent.

Sports & Outdoor Recreation

Our sports programs aim to build confidence, teamwork, and physical literacy. Seasonal offerings include:

  • Mountain Biking (offered to select school cohorts every spring and/or fall)
  • Skateboarding
  • Cooperative Games
  • Outdoor Recreation Programs

We understand that not all families have access to specialized equipment. RCCS makes every effort to provide mountain bikes, helmets, skateboards, and other necessary gear to students who need them.
